Yep, that?s right. Spam on your phone. Can you imagine how irritating it would be to receive dozens of calls a day with pre-recorded messages trying to coax you into buying all manner of pharmaceuticals or dodgy wares?
Because VoIP is just another form of digital communication, it could potentially be hijacked in the same way that spammers grab your email address and target you with their advertisements. VoIP spam also doesn?t only affect VoIP users ? the spammers themselves could use an inexpensive computer-based VoIP service to target individuals who use regular phones too.
Computer security experts have been predicting the coming wave of VoIP spam for a few years, although thankfully it has yet to manifest. This is because the number of VoIP users is still relatively small compared to email users, but this is set to change over the next several years.
At the moment there?s not much to worry about if you invest in a VoIP service, but it?ll be worth keeping an eye on the VoIP spam situation, and protecting your phone number in the same way you do your email address.
