Moveable cool: Portable airconditioner buyers guide

You?ve had enough of summer heatwaves. The kids can?t sleep, your home office computer is overheating and you feel that you are living in a sauna. The fan that?s on ?high? isn?t enough. Perhaps you already have airconditioning but there is one room in the house that you just can?t cool or you just simply need to cool down, right now. In situations like this a portable airconditioner is exactly what you need. No need to wait for the airconditioner installer, no need to cut holes in the wall. Simply pick up a unit at your local dealer, load it in the back of your car, take it home, plug it in and enjoy cool air, quick! David Neiger reports.

Today, modern portable airconditioners are about the size of a two drawer filing cabinet or a small bar fridge and mounted on wheels so you can move them around easily.

Why we like portable airconditioners

Australians have a growing love for portable airconditioners. They are great for quickly just cooling the extra hot places in your house and since they can be easily moved, they can be switched on to cool the lounge room during the day and wheeled to the bedroom at night for a comfortable night?s sleep. Their easy portability means you can even take one travelling in your caravan or transport one to your holiday home.

Another benefit is that portable airconditioners don?t require installation. And sometimes when the mercury rises, you may not have the patience to wait for a bigger system to be installed in your home, which could mean waiting days or weeks for any relief from the heat.

Portable airconditioners come in handy during situations where power is limited (such as in country areas or in places that rely on generator power). And because they use less power than a split system and only cool the room where they are actually needed, they can potentially produce less greenhouse gas emissions. Renters are also particularly fond of portable units, because they can be plugged in and switched on immediately and can be taken to a new home with very little fuss.
