Portable video options

Video has followed music into the portable realm, but there are choices to be made if you like the view from places other than the couch, writes Alex Kidman.

There's a Weird Al Yankovic song (from his 1993 Album, Alapalooza) called Frank's 2000 inch TV, which tells the tale of the man who buys (you guessed it) a 2000 inch TV. Given this was the early 1990s, we're probably talking CRT - you don't even want to think how much such a beast would weigh.

This monstrous TV crowds over the landscape, and now, as per the song, "Frank decides what everybody sees". Now, TV sizes have grown in the past 15 years, but not quite to that extent, with practically affordable models topping out at around 100 inches (254 cm). Where entertainment has headed instead is into the portable realm, with plenty of lightweight options for you to consider. Best of all, you don't decide what anyone else but you has to see.
Not too surprisingly, the key aspect of portable video that you should consider is the screen size - that being what you see (aka: video), which is after all Latin for "I see". Who said home entertainment couldn't be educational too?
Anyway, if you're up for lugging a larger screen around, you can carry around a laptop or portable DVD player, many of which also come with car installation options. On the smaller side are portable music players that incorporate video taken directly from your PC.

Smaller still - albeit still in their infancy - are mobile phones that can either play back highly compressed clips, or receive video streams direct from your telecommunications provider. Which option works best for you is a matter of choice, personal taste and your own travel plans. We've broken out the major players into four categories: portable DVD, portable multimedia, phones and finally laptops.
