Top tips for keeping your washing machine in shape

If you've shelled out several hundred dollars or possibly even thousands of dollars of hard earned cash on a new washing machine, chances are you would like your machine to last you through the years without any operational hiccups. A little machine maintenance and care can help you keep your washing machine in tip top condition.

• Ensure that the pockets of all clothing to be washed are empty.
• Loose items, such as coins, safety pins, nails, screws, or stones can damage your appliance.
• Do not use processed water containing oil, cream or lotion, which is usually found in skincare shops or massage clinics.
• Stainless steel washing tubs don't normally rust but if you leave metal objects such as a hair pin in the tub for prolonged periods it could possibly rust.
• Don't leave water or bleach containing chlorine in the washtub long periods.
• Remove loose bra wires from the wash load prior to washing a load of clothing as they may damage your machine.
• Strong bleaching liquids may be corrosive to your machine's washtub so be sure not to leave items to soak in bleach or other sanitising agents in your washing machine.
• If your machine has a fabric softener dispenser it's a good idea to rinse it regularly with warm soapy water.
• Never use chemical or scouring cleaners to clean your washing machine as they could damage the paintwork or the plastic surfaces of your machine.
• Clean your washing machine a couple of times each year (without including clothes in the wash cycle).
