Asus adds an Android 8 inch for tablet tribes

Not everyone needs a tablet, but those of you love the portable touchscreen that is a tablet have a new one to pick from, with Asus bring its first 8 inch model to Australia.

Joining what can only be considered the throng of mobile slate computers, the Asus MeMO Pad 8 — yes, that’s the spelling Asus is using — aims to separate itself from the competition by bringing an 8 inch screen to the Asus MeMO Pad family, providing another screen size in a range of tablets currently sitting at both 7 and 10 inches.

The new entry for Asus matches the old 1280×800 screen resolution to the 8 inch size, and packs in a quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, a 5 megapixel rear camera, 1.2 megapixel front camera, and support for more storage through a microSD card slot.

Asus is suggesting 9 hours are possible from its 3950mAh battery, and with Android 4.2 on-board, we wouldn’t be surprised, but one thing we are a little stunned by is the price.

Coming in at $329 RRP, the 8 inch MeMO Pad isn’t just getting close to Google’s much higher resolution Nexus 7 at $399, but is also well over a hundred bucks more than the 7 inch Asus MeMO Pad, which the 8 inch joins.

Keen parties can find the MeMO Pad 8 at Harvey Norman stores across the country, though, while the two other MeMO Pad models — a 7 and 10 inch — are available wherever Asus tablets are sold.
