Sorry guys, my PC won't even boot up, it just gets to the desktop and nothing happens, the icons don't come up or anything.

Sucks to be you!

Sounds pretty bad. What is your PC?

An older Pavillion tower, I bought it about two years ago. It was working really well until this morning.

Two years is a long time for a PC to keep working. You should totally restore the system software. Do you still have the box? There's a disc in there for System Restore, just put it in the disc drive and reboot and it will reinstall everything the way it was when you got it.

Good advice except if there is a hardware problem it won't fix it.

posted by Bandolier

True, but it is a good place to start. What's the point of sending it to get fixed if it was some problem with Windows that you could fix just by putting that disc in?

Hey SteveGreene, hope you backed all your files up!

Let us know how you got on, SteveGreene!

once it gets to the desktop hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and a task manager will appear click on the processes tab and highlight Explorer then click end task make sure its not in the process list now hit File>New Task then type explorer, if your desktop icons appear back up all you data and preform a full windows reinstall. if the icons don't reappear restart the computer and hit F8 until you see a windows boot selection screen select safe mode and back up all your data.
