Kogan hits HiFi with a budget receiver system

Not everyone has thousands of dollars to spend on home theatre systems, and here to fill that gap is Australian e-tailer Kogan.

This week, the cut-price gadget seller has added HiFi gear to his wares, with the “Kogan 5.1 Surround Sound System,” a product that lacks an imaginative name, but aims to make up for it with 3D sound in a price coming just under $300.

The system consists of a receiver, five speakers, and a subwoofer, operating over 5.1, and providing Bluetooth, AM/FM radio, HDMI inputs, and computability with 3D through pass through.

We’re told there are microphone inputs here, too, with adjustable treble and bass, and the speakers all rely on your stock standard speaker cable, so there’s no need to think you’re locked into Kogan’s speakers here.

As for why 5.1 when there are quite a few other options out there (5.1, 6.1, 7.1, 9.2, for instance), Kogan told GadgetGuy that it doesn’t “force customers to pay for something they don’t need.”

“In our conversations with customers, most expressed the view that 5.1 was more than enough,” said a Kogan spokesperson.

One thing we suspect its customers might want is support for Dolby or another digital decoding standard, which Kogan is checking on for support in its receiver.

We’ll let you know if we hear anything, but for now, you’ll find the speaker system for $299 from Kogan’s online store.
