Next LG superphone set to be unveiled August 8

The successor to LG’s superphone looks to be on the way, with a name change for the flagship Optimus handsets and an announcement coming in two weeks.

August 7 in New York is the official day for the new smartphone, a device which LG is hinting will have a slightly different form of control, thanks to an image showing some form of vertical controller on the back.

In Australia, we’ll hear the news a day later – thank you, time difference – and it will fall under the same “G” moniker that came with the Optimus G, but there will be no more “Optimus” name for the flagship handset.

“Our vision is to make LG’s newest ‘G’ devices synonymous with excellence, raising the bar even further for the ultimate in user experience,” said Jong-seok Park, CEO of LG Mobile Communications.

“The new G2 will build upon the excellent reputation established by previous ‘G Series’ products.”

The good news about the upcoming G2 is that LG Australia is in talks to have this model hit Australia, with a press release hinting that this will be “in line with the product’s global release.”

Here’s hoping that results to sooner rather than later.
