Huawei at IFA 2019

Huawei at IFA 2019 was all about its prowess in chip development and its claimed world-first 5G SOC, and the fastest ever 5G processor – the Kirin 990 5G.

Now GadgetGuy usually removes all hyperbole from vendor statements, but we will let the ‘Huawei at IFA 2019’ claim through.

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG), delivered a keynote speech titled “Rethink Evolution” he said

“Kirin 990 (5G) is the world’s first 5G SoC. It will enable end-users to access superb 5G connectivity experience one step ahead in the first year of 5G commercialisation. The Kirin 990 (5G) has been fully upgraded in terms of performance and power efficiency, AI computing, and ISP, extending mobile phone experiences to a new level.

What we know about the Kirin 990

  • Available in both a 5G and 4G version
  • Huawei Kirin SoCs are currently only available in Huawei’s own and its Honour brand
  • Website here
  • 5G used 7nm UE manufacturing by TSMC with 10.3 billion transistors and dual Huawei Da Vinci architecture NPUs
  • 4G uses 7nm with 8 billion transistors (slower core and one NPU)
  • 2x Cortex A76 @ 2.86GHz, 2x Cortex A76 @ 2.36GHz, 4X Cortex A55 @ 1.95GHz
  • 16-core Mali G76 GPU
  • Dual ISP (Block matching and 3D filtering)
  • UFS 3.0 storage support
  • 5G Balong modem supports sub-6GHz 5G signals with a maximum of 2.3Gbps download and 1.25Gbps upload. It does not support mmWave.
  • The neural processing unit is a coprocessor is optimised for machine learning frameworks like Google’s TensorFlow. It can automatically distribute workloads like voice recognition, computer vision, and natural language understanding across its heterogeneous computing architecture.

It is likely to be in the Mate 30/Pro to be released on 19 September. It may also appear in a re-engineered P30 Pro as well.

The Kirin 990 relies extensively on Arm’s chip designs for both its CPU and GPU elements. However, Huawei’s relationship with ARM is uncertain as the US has imposed sanctions on the company. It may be the last ARM-based chip it can produce until the ban is lifted.

HUAWEI FreeBuds 3

It uses a delicate earphone design and comes with a unique, round case.

HUAWEI FreeBuds 3 provides users with a more comfortable wearing experience. It has black and white colour options.

  • BT 5.1 (equivalent)
  • 4.5g per bud and 48g charge case

P30 Pro new colour options – Mystic Blue and Misty Lavender

Huawei announced two new colour options for its popular HUAWEI P30 Pro as well as upgraded photography and video editing features, and is ready for the all-new EMUI10 (for existing owners as well).

The HUAWEI P30 has sold over 10 million units within the first 85 days, a new record for Huawei’s flagship device shipments.

Walter Ji, President of Huawei’s Western Europe Consumer Business Group said, “The P30 Series has been hugely popular in Europe so we wanted to refresh the range and appeal to new audiences.”

Video software (also as a software update to existing owners)

The latest photography upgrades include a new super night selfie function. It uses a high image sensing portrait algorithm to brighten subjects at night, whilst lowering the brightness of the light source in the background for natural, crystal clear selfies even in low light conditions.

Upgraded HUAWEI Vlog AI editing function can create music videos from your gallery with just one click. Once the video has been created, you can customise it with your favourite music, filters, effects and movie scales and even add more clips.
