OPPO and realme next-gen 125W fast charge – and more

125W

How would you like to fill a typical smartphone battery in just 20 minutes? Well OPPO and its sibling realme have launched the 125W Flash and 125W UltraDART chargers as well as a host of other next-gen charging technologies.

This article, by necessity, is the combination of two different press releases. Still, as BBK owns OPPO and realme (and vivo and OnePlus), we will cover these advances together. We anxiously await these technologies and the future phones they are for.

What is 125W Flash/UltraDART charge?

It uses a higher voltage and amperage, in this case, 20V/6.25A/125W to rapidly fill as much as possible a specially designed dual battery/electronics, When reaches 40° temperature it drops back to lower voltage/amperages and so on until full.

The battery must be in at least two parts and the charger three parallel charge pumps that require a special USB-C cable. OPPO/realme claims it has achieved 98% charge energy conversion – spectacular figures.

The 125W charger has special over-voltage, over-temperature cut-outs and battery health sensors that reduce any chance of battery overheating.

We understand that the technology is backwards compatible with existing SuperVOOC and VOOC flash charge phones and realme DART chargers. If used with a standard USB-C cable they revert to USB-C PD 3.0 65W or QC 4+ 36W.

OPPO 65W AirVOOC Wireless Flash Charger: 30 minutes to full

As a Qi aficionado, this is exciting. OPPO has managed to get lossy Qi charging up similar levels as its wired 65W SuperVOOC. Now OPPO doesn’t make a lot of Qi-enabled phones so we can look forward to future models supporting this.

OPPO developed an isolated charge pump technology and parallel dual-coil design to increase wireless charging efficiency.

It has five-fold safety protection measures. It is also compatible with the Qi standard and provides users with a cable-free and super-fast charging experience.

The charger pad has a solid-state cooler – far more efficient than a fan. The unique design makes mobile phone charging more convenient and has the capacity for high-power charging.

OPPO 50W Mini SuperVOOC shrinks the charger

At just 82.2×39.10.5mm x 60g this delivers 50W SuperVOOC to compatible OPPO phones as well USB-C PD 3.0 27W to other phones.

OPPO 110W Mini-Flash Charger that features unique dual-level GaN architecture

It is also small, but it achieves massive output by using a GaN high-frequency switch (a.k.a. a switching power supply) instead of a transformer as used other chargers. In simple terms, it uses GaN (Gallium Nitride) power transistors with low GHz switching frequencies to efficiently (less lossy) convert 240V power to USB-C PD power.

Will fast charge hurt batteries?

The short answer is that batteries have a fixed number of power cycles. Regardless of slow or fast charge when you use these up, your battery needs replacing (and internal batteries are not easy to do). So the answer is NO.

OPPO and realme (and vivo) use a dual 6C high rate battery system. Charging two batteries at once (VOOC or DART) is the key to halving the speed. That is why a 125V Flash charger becomes a 65W USB-C charger with a standard one battery phone.

Fast charging with the right management control units (MCU) to check battery temperature and health are far more effective and safe than standard dumb chargers.

OPPO has applied for more than 2,800 global patents for flash charging. The company’s 30+ smartphone models featuring VOOC flash charge technology have delivered the ultra-fast charging experience to over 157 million users globally.
