Apple pushes past the billion mark for podcasts

We’re all fans of listening to music, but some of us actually prefer spoken word shows, and of course there are podcasts. Apple is one of the better gatekeepers for the podcast indexes, and the subscriber mark has now hit a special anniversary.

The company responsible for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad called in today to let us know that podcast subscriptions have hit the one billion mark, since Apple first launched its podcast system in 2005.

One billion subscriptions is a lot of people listening to what regular people have to say, but some of this is also video based, as Apple pointed out that some of Australia’s most loved podcasts include ABC’s “Media Watch” and “Good Game” programs, as well as the science and idea friendly “TED Talks.”

GadgetGuy will be making its way to podcasts soon, too, but we’ll let you know more when we’re all ready on that front.
