Confirmed: LG to go 3D in mobile phones this year

It looks like LG might have found one way to one-up Apple, with the possibility of a 3D phone making its way to consumers this year.

The new device is rumoured to be an LG Optimus with a glasses-less 3D screen using similar technology to what’s found on the Nintendo 3DS and Sony Bloggie 3D. If the third dimension is to be found in the device, LG is going to need some power, so expect the phone to use the Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset found in the recently announced LG Optimus 2X handset.

With Mobile World Congress just around the corner, we’ll know for sure in a few days.

UPDATE: LG has confirmed our rumour and sent word that it will unveil the LG Optimus 3D at Mobile World Congress in mid-February. The LG Optimus 3D will feature a glasses-free LCD panel, dual-lens 3D camera, and DLNA for 3D content sharing.
