D-Link at CES 2020 – Wi-Fi 6, Mesh, 5G and security cameras

We have been waiting (and waiting) for D-Link to announce Wi-Fi 6 AX routers. After all, many other companies have up to AX11000 tri-band routers for some time. D-Link at CES 2020 announced a range of lower speed AX routers and mesh extenders.

D-Link at CES 2020 announced Wi-Fi 6 home networking solutions using Wi-Fi CERTIFIED EasyMesh and/or D-Link Proprietary Mesh technology. EasyMesh means it should (in theory but let’s not go there) work with any other brands EasyMesh routers. All routers work with Google Assistant and Alexa.

Well we have it from other sources that its AX products will include (US$ – add 50% for approx. AUD)

D-Link at CES 2020
  • AX1500, 2.4GHz/300Mbps, 5Ghz/1200Mbps, 2-stream (DIR-X1560-US), Q1 2020, $119.99
  • AX1800, 574/1201Mbps, 2-stream (DIR-X1870-US), Q2 2020, $139.99
  • AX2400, 574/1802Mbps, 3-stream (DIR-X2460-US), Q3 2020, $159.99
  • AX5400 574/4804Mbps, 4-stream (DIR-X5460-US), Q1 2020, $279.99
  • AX1800 Mesh Wi-Fi 6 Range Extender (DAP-X1870-US), Q2 2020, $129.99
  • AX1800 Whole Home Mesh System (COVR-X1872-US), Q2 2020, $269.99

The DIR series are dual-band routers with EasyMesh capability, meaning that you can select a base speed you need and add DAP extenders. The issue with adding extenders to dual-band is that there is no dedicated backhaul channel. We assume the extenders will have Ethernet WAN ports to help here.

The Covr-X1870 is 574/1201Mbps dual-band – so the back-haul comment applies too. It does not support EasyMesh requiring dedicated Covr satellites.

5G routers

D-Link’s DWR-2101 5G NR MiFi and DWP-1020 5G NR Outdoor Unit enable users to experience wireless speeds (Telco dependent – up to 2Mbps in Australia but likely capped to 50Mbps) at home, at the office and on-the-go.

GadgetGuy’s take – D-Link at CES 2020 was a letdown

Not that the products are bad in any way but we wanted more. NETGEAR and many others have forged ahead with AX routers and mesh and D-Link seems to be playing a slow catch-up.

D-Link Australia website is here but no details are on it yet.
