Dyson V15 Detect and Dyson Omni-glide – solves more vacuum pain points

Dyson V15 Detect

The Dyson V15 Detect and Dyson Omni-glide are two of the latest vacuum products from the Dyson stable. Aimed at entirely different markets, they have Dyson innovations that solve pain points you never knew you had.

Dyson Omni-glide – a small stick with a big attitude

We will start with the Omni-glide. So-called as it has a dual, motorised, rotating ‘fluffy’ head on a slim and light hand ‘stick’. It is perfect for hard floor (not carpet), spot cleaning and smaller apartments. The dual fluffy head (made from long-wearing carbon fibre) gives near 360° manoeuvrability so you can clean around table/chair legs. Its lie-flat handle means a long reach under furniture. It also transforms to a handheld and has tools for crevasse and dusting.

The new format uses all the Dyson tech like the Hyperdymium, high speed, DC brushless motor; snap-in rechargeable battery; cyclone vacuum; and captures up to 99.99% of particles down to 3um.

Important fact: everything except the electronics can be washed clean – bin, filter, soft roller cleaner head, and tools.

Dyson V15 Detect – for dust you never knew

The main features of the Dyson V15 Detect (over previous models) is that it comes with

  • A laser light embedded in the new slimline hard floor “Fluffy’ motorised head that helps to ‘see’ floor dust
  • A new 15Hz piezo sensor that can detect and count > 10um (small particles including bacteria); 60um (typical dust and dirt); 180um (dust mites and bedbugs); and 500um (about a grain of sugar)
  • Using the piezo sensor, it adjusts vacuum strength to suit the floor material. This is infinitely more efficient than simple vacuum loss sensing.
  • A new anti-tangle motorised conical brush to pick up hair and is perfect for mattress cleaning

The result is more effective battery life – up to 60 minutes on the snap-in battery. This is enough for most typical Aussie whole of home cleaning. Or buy an extra battery if your home is larger.

The laser illumination is not a gimmick. It only works on hard floors as part of the new slimline Fluffy head. That also solves the issues of getting under cupboard overhangs. The dust typing and counting is also not a gimmick. For those obsessive-compulsive cleaners, you can see if your surfaces are clean. It’s a real eye-opener on mattresses and fabric lounges.

Like all Dyson V-series, it has the Fluffy motorised head (hard surfaces); High torque motorised head (carpet and has a new anti-tangle hair comb); hair screw tool; crevice tool; stubborn dirt brush; soft dusting brush; and a combo tool. Most come with a wall mount docking station.

GadgetGuy’s take

We will be reviewing these shortly.

The Dyson media demonstration bought up the critical point – a clean home does not necessarily mean a healthy home. For example, there may be (and probably are) millions of dust mites living in your mattress or furniture. Or masses of allergens and bacteria on curtains etc. The V15 and V12 Detect with their laser head and super revealing readout means you have proof of a real clean.

Dyson V15 Detect
  • 60% of Australians are unaware of the potential link between household dust and viruses
  • 80% don’t clean their mattress regularly – alarming given there can be millions of dust mites in a single mattress
  • 20% wear outdoor shoes in the home, increasing the diversity of the microbial landscape of the dust in the home

Add to that other Dyson product like its air-purifiers, and now its formaldehyde purifier. You start to move towards a healthy home where asthma and hay fever sufferers can live a relatively normal life.

Let’s finish with a long quote from Sir James Dyson

As engineers, our job is to solve daily problems. The past 12 months has created plenty of new ones with more time spent indoors. We are cleaning more often, trying to remove additional house dust. But we are desperate for peace of mind that our homes are truly clean.

Our latest vacuums use laser technology to reveal hidden dust. They integrate a diode laser into the cleaner head that is precisely positioned at a 1.5-degree angle to create the best contrast between dust and floor. We don’t think detection is enough, so we meticulously size and count the particles 15,000 times a second using an acoustic piezo sensor which converts vibrations into electrical signals, displaying precisely the size and number of particles sucked up on an LCD at the back of the vacuum.
