Family Guy: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side on sale December 23

I went along to a screening of ‘Family Guy: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side’, the franchise’s latest Star Wars spoof, ahead of its release on DVD and Blu-ray on December 23.

‘Family Guy: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side’ spoofs ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’, following on from last year’s ‘Family Guy: Blue Harvest’ which took the piss out of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’.

So, what should you expect? Well, it’s Family Guy, so it’s often politically incorrect, and yes, often very funny. The joke rate is a quite a bit more sparse than the regular Family Guy show, made so by the replication of the storyline of the ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’ – story exposition cuts big time into the joke time. And be warned if you’re not a fan of swearing, ‘Family Guy: Something Something Something Dark Side’ works a little blue now and then. Bottom line though, if you enjoy Family Guy, I expect you’ll like Something, Something, Something, Dark Side… maybe not love, but definitely like.

Peter Griffin plays Han Solo, Lois plays Princess Leia, Chris is Luke Skywalker, and Brian and Stewie are course Chewbacca and Darth Vader respectively. Also spliced in from time to time are non-animated cameos – there’s a Tom Selleck clip from ‘Magnum P.I’ dropped in for instance.

Amongst the extras on all editions of the movie, there’s a sneak preview, in the form of a cast read-through, of the Family Guy’s next Star Wars spoof. The target is ‘Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”, which in the Family Guy universe will be called ‘We Have A Bad Feeling About This’. There are 70 minutes of extras on the DVD edition, and 100 minutes on the Blu-ray edition. There will also be a limited edition, called The Secret Compartment Box, that will include a Giant Chicken Boba Fett t-shirt and a set of collector’s cards.
