HTC’s 13 megapixel photography phone landing in Australia shortly

Like taking pictures? Like taking selfies? If you checked yes on both of those, HTC’s next phone might be for you, and as luck would have it, you’ll even find it on shelves soon enough, too.

Australians sure are spoiled for choice when it comes to smartphones, and those of you that dig a selfie or two will have a new model to look at shortly sporting a 13 megapixel camera on each side — yes, front and back — of the smartphone.

It’s called the “Eye” because this one is all about pictures, and with dual 13 megapixel cameras with a flash on each side, hopes to really make a mark on people who can’t live without taking photos and sharing them with the world.

The new smartphone sports some of the specs seen on HTC’s flagship One (M8) from earlier in the year, including the quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.3GHz, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, microSD slot for expanding this, 4G LTE connectivity, GPS, Near-Field Communication, Bluetooth 4.0 with AptX, and a Full HD screen which on this smartphone will sit at 5.2 inches.

The 13 megapixel camera on each side is new, though, with the rear camera featuring a low-aperture of f/2.0 at an equivalent of 28mm for 35mm cameras, while the front camera is wide at an equivalent o 22mm and running with f/2.2.

Both cameras will feature a dual LED flash alongside them, and both will capture video at Full HD 1080p, with a dedicated camera button found on the hardware.

Android also runs here, with HTC’s “Sense” overlay applied.

Oh, and there’s one final thing, and it appears to be something people have been screaming out for, as HTC adds water resistance to a handset, making the HTC Desire Eye rated for IPX7, which should make it useful for up to a metre of water for up to 30 minutes.

“The HTC Desire Eye is the ultimate imaging phone, combining our iconic design and smooth user experience with the most advanced mobile photographic technology in the market,” said Ben Hodgson, Country Manager for HTC in Australia and New Zealand.

“The HTC Desire Eye is waterproof allowing users to capture and share their special summer moments in and out of water and in high quality. In addition, our new HTC Eye Experience adds a powerful suite of advanced photographic editing, content creation & sharing features to complement already impressive device specs.”

Pricing for the HTC Desire Eye comes in at $799, with availability exclusively from JB HiFi from November 20.
