LG debunks dirty dishwasher myths

Do you rinse? Do you remove food scraps? Or do you just throw it in? Well LG has some research that debunks dirty dishwasher myths. It says it depends on the dishwasher of course.

My wife and I live a simple life. We eat out as much as possible and rinse dishes before placing them in the dishwasher for its weekly clean!

But my kidult daughter on a visit placed all manner of dirty dishes in the cavernous 14-place dishwasher. I chastened her of course, as you do, but advice from LG on dirty dishwasher myths seems to support her lazy stance.

Myth: You need to rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher

Rinsing your dishes can help the overall cleaning results of your dishwasher. But it is not essential.

LG found that a few seconds removing large food scraps was beneficial especially if you were washing straight away. If you think about it, when rinsing your dishes you only put them under water for a few seconds, but during a normal cycle the water spray in your dishwasher passes over the same spot hundreds of times and generally at a much higher water pressure than the tap.

The new range of LG QuadWash Dishwashers incorporates four spray blades on the bottom rotating arm. Two have oscillating water spray nozzles – to help get into those tight spaces between plates, making the overall cleaning performance more effective than previous LG models.

Myth: Running the dishwasher will raise my electricity bill

If you normally hand wash you may find you fill your sink two or three times to do the same number of items your dishwasher can handle. This means you are relying on your hot water system to heat your water, thereby using energy and water. In fact, CHOICE notes that Australian households use about 31 litres of water a day in the kitchen sink.

Most LG dishwashers can use less than $25 per quarter in electricity even if you run your dishwasher every day.

Fact: My dishwasher is a home to bacteria

The truth is, it can be. But compared to hand-washing, using a dishwasher can be more hygienic. Water at 60° will sanitise dishes, but that is too hot for our hands. Using a dishwasher can be a more sanitary option for cleaning dishes.

The trick with the LG QuadWash Dishwasher is to select the ‘Extra Hot’ rinse option. This finishes the cleaning cycle with an 80° rinse, which is high enough to kill bacteria such as salmonella. LG dishwashers also feature stainless steel tubs to help reduce the level of bacteria growth.

Myth: You have to fill the dishwasher before using it

There is no need to load a dishwasher completely before using it. In fact, the new LG dishwashers feature an option known as ‘half load’ where you can choose to only clean the middle or lower rack

Fact: There’s a right way to load the dishwasher

Absolutely! Loading dishes, the right way helps to get the best possible results out of your dishwasher.

The most important thing is to ensure there are adequate gaps between your dishes.

To assist this, the LG QuadWash Dishwashers feature EasyRack Plus which enables adjustments of the middle rack height to fit various size item as well foldable tines for added loading flexibility. Also, the ‘Dual Zone’ Wash option provides for water spray intensity to be varied between racks so you can wash your dirty pots on the bottom rack while cleaning glassware on the middle rack.

Fact: LG wants you to look at its LG QuadWash range

Sure dirty dishwasher myths is an unabashed LG promotion, but it makes sense. Let’s hand it to LG for wrapping some research around an otherwise mind numbingly boring domestic topic.

Me, I will continue to rinse. I have learned to stack (you have to if you want to get a week’s dishes in there). And I am going to select the hottest temperature on the machines I have.

But the LG QuadWash range is superior and worth a look.
