LG Touch Watch Phone available soon – but it will cost you an arm and a leg to get one on your wrist

For so very long the movies and TV have been lying to us. We still can’t buy hover skateboards and jet cars, and you can’t physically transport yourself inside a videogame. Back to the Future, The Jetsons and Tron – yeah, that’s right, I’m looking at you! You can buy yourself a jet pack harness a la Lost in Space (the TV show, not the movie), but every time I see someone demonstrate one on the news I get nervous and commence a countdown in my head for the jet-packee to turn themselves into a possible pancake.

But the good news is, come December, you will be able to turn those long-held fantasies of wanting to be Dick Tracy into some sort of reality, as LG is releasing a watch phone. This is a similar little doodad to the watch that was first shown as a prototype at the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It’s 13.9 mm thick, with a 3.63 cm touchscreen, an in-built camera and 7.2 Mbps 3G HSDPA compatibility. Other features include:

  • Voice recognition features, with or without a Bluetooth headset
  • Text to Speech (TTS) reading of text messages and other information out loud
  • Bluetooth and a built-in speaker for playing back music

The LG Touch Watch Phone, model number LG-GD910, is coming here in a very limited quantity in December, and will have the really-very-very-early-adopter price of $2,299. Still, I guess if you’re lucky enough to pick up one of the few that are coming here, you’ll make the $2,299 back and more with all your new work as a part-time spy.
