Last week we wrote that internet security was becoming a problem for Mac users with a new “Mac Defender” malware making the rounds. Now, we’re learning that Apple has come up with a solution.

Based on an article in Apple’s customer support knowledge-base for “How to avoid or remove Mac Defender malware”, Apple says:

“In the coming days, Apple will deliver a Mac OS X software update that will automatically find and remove Mac Defender malware and its known variants.  The update will also help protect users by providing an explicit warning if they download this malware. “

This patch shouldn’t suggest that you won’t need antivirus or internet security for your Mac in the long term as this will patch Mac Defender specifically, at least for the moment.

That said, with as many Mac users as there are, we don’t think this is the last we’ve heard from the Mac OS virus camp, and would still suggest some form of antivirus.
