MG Motor Australia is teaming up with the NSW state government to help install up to 3,500 electric vehicle chargers throughout eligible regional locations for free.

This comes off the back of the NSW state government’s recent announcement that an electric vehicle charger grant will be targeting local regional attractions such as wineries, cafes, motels, zoos and museums. These grants, available to regional councils, will cover 75% of up to four alternating current (AC) destination chargers per location.

Under the scheme, MG Motor Australia has pledged to cover the remaining 25%, on the condition the company’s MG EV ChargeHub infrastructure is used. Additionally, the NSW state government will cover 75% of charger installation costs plus 50% of a two-year charger software subscription for successful grant applicants.

As mentioned by Gizmodo Australia, the MG Motor chargers included are the $1,990 7kW AC and $2,090 11kW AC ChargeHubs. Both charging stations use the Type 2 charging ports favoured by most electric vehicles in Australia.

As detailed last year, the NSW Electric Vehicle Strategy aims to boost electric vehicles to 52% of new car sales by 2030-31, with reduced taxes on electric vehicles, refunded stamp duties, and 25,000 rebates worth $3,000 each – measures that MG Motor Australia endorsed. $20 million in grants is up for grabs as part of the regional charger plan, alongside $131 million for ultra-fast charging infrastructure throughout the state.

Earlier this year, MG Motor Australia announced the 2022 MG ZS EV range of electric SUVs, including the $46,990 MG ZS EV Excite in addition to the $49,990 MG ZS EV Essence, arriving in Australia this July.

Further information and application instructions about the electric vehicle destination charging grants are available via the NSW state government’s website.
