New federal laws could see the launch of up to eight new digital-only TV channels in 2007. Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Helen Coonan, said By next year, a range of new services including free-to-air, in-home, digital-only channels or even perhaps snack televisionn small segments of TV content delivered over a mobile device like a mobile phone could be availablee.

Current broadcast restrictions will be lifted too, with commercial networks allowed to transmit a high definition digital multichannel by 2007 and a standard definition multichannel by 2009. ABC and SBS will be freed from current genre restrictions and permitted to show a range of new and exciting content on their digital multichannels.
