New Arlo Pro 5S 2K security camera has better wireless range and battery life

Arlo Pro 5S 2K security camera announcement

Home security brand Arlo’s recent busy period of announcements continues, unveiling the Pro 5S 2K Security Camera, a device featuring long Wi-Fi range and efficient battery usage.

One of the major points Arlo emphasises with the Pro 5S is its tri-band connectivity, which is meant to extend the device’s wireless range further than other security devices. Tri-band connectivity in this instance refers to dual-band Wi-Fi compatibility – supporting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands – and SecureLink, Arlo’s proprietary wireless technology. SecureLink connectivity also means the Pro 5S stays connected to other Arlo devices, even if an internet or power outage occurs.

The new home security camera also reportedly has up to a 30% longer battery life than the Arlo Pro 4 camera, which is an already-impressive device. As its extended name suggests, the Pro 5S records video in 2K resolution, with HDR support for capturing clear details. It also has a 160-degree viewing angle, a built-in spotlight and siren system, and two-way audio for speaking with visitors if you can’t (or don’t want to) make it to the door. It’s also compatible with Google Assistant, and Alexa support is coming soon.

Like other Arlo devices, such as the recently announced Arlo Home Security System, the Pro 5S connects to the Arlo Secure app, which acts as a command centre for your security devices. You can use the app to establish geofences, control alarms, set schedules and other monitoring tools. The app is also set for a major 4.0 update later this month, giving the user interface an upgrade while streamlining access to various emergency features.

An exact release date for the Pro 5S is to be confirmed. Pre-orders are open overseas for US$249.99, which is fairly comparable to the Arlo Pro 4’s local RRP of $369. Fingers crossed we get local details soon, alongside Australian-specific news on the company’s discreet panic button technology, Arlo Safe.

Given the strong reputation of the brand’s home security gear, we’d expect the Pro 5S to follow in its predecessor’s footsteps. Increased wireless range and longer battery life sound like solid upgrades or an even better entry point for anyone yet to establish a home security system.
