We’ve seen cameras in smartphones go from two megapixels to eight megapixels as standard in the past few years, and now it looks like it could hit 12, as Sharp readies a ridiculously tiny camera for upcoming devices.

Twelve could be the magic number for next year’s devices, with Sharp showing off a new CMOS camera capable of shooting 12.1 megapixels and 1080p Full HD video in a module that measures 5.47mm thin.

Aside for being one of the industry’s thinnest smartphone camera modules, it will also  feature image stabilisation to assist in video capture.

This is, of course, a preview of what smartphones could have next year, with Sharp getting these things to mobile manufacturers right now, giving us hope that 12 megapixels may well be the norm for mobile phones released next year.
