Presto puts Big Bang Theory online with a bang of a game

The news this week isn’t just about Star Wars, as the geeky game of rock, paper, scissors gets updated for a special tournament happening this weekend in Sydney and Melbourne.

A little different than your standard winner-decides game of scissors-paper-stone, this version of the game is based on an episode found in the second season of the show, where one of the characters — Sheldon — proposes a different style of game with more choices and therefore more outcomes, allowing for players to tie less and achieve victory more efficiently.

In the old game, it came down to three basic outcomes, something we’ve all pretty much memorised because of how often we — as kids — would have played this.

Specifically, rock paper scissors results in:

If scissors is thrown, it cuts paper but gets beaten by rock.

If rock is thrown, it crushes scissors but gets beaten by paper.

And if paper is thrown, it crushes rock but gets cut by scissors.

The Big Bang Theory updating of the game changes things with the addition of a lizard and Star Trek’s Spock fingers.

As such, the game is summarised as follows:

  1. Scissors cut Paper
  2. Paper covers Rock
  3. Rock crushes Lizard
  4. Lizard poisons Spock
  5. Spock smashes Scissors
  6. Scissors decapitate Lizard
  7. Lizard eats Paper
  8. Paper disproves Spock
  9. Spock vaporises Rock
  10. Rock crushes Scissors

If that hasn’t confused you thoroughly and you’re good to game, a tournament will be played across Australia’s biggest cities this weekend, with a Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock tournament happening on December 12 at Kings Comics in Sydney’s CBD (310 Pitt St), while Melbourne will get the tournament on December 13 at All Star Comics on 53 Queen St.

The tournament comes as Presto adds the first seven seasons of “The Big Bang Theory” to its service, while the app has also been aded to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles, too.

“We wanted to take the launch of The Big Bang Theory one step further and offer fans a once in a lifetime opportunity to live like Sheldon, Leonard, Penny and the rest of the characters for a day and have a bit of fun,” said Shaun James, CEO of Presto.

“We encourage everyone to come down, dress up in their favourite cosplay like the characters do and take part in an event, the likes of which Sydney and Melbourne haven’t seen before.”

Presto’s tournament will run from 10am to 4pm over the weekend on the various days, and no registration is needed to attend.

Simply turn up and throw rock, or paper, or scissors, or lizard. Or Spock. Definitely throw Spock.
