The best local multiplayer gaming experience so far this year, Portal 2 is an affable and humorous puzzle-based game that encourages co-operation, communication and some deft collaboration as you variously breeze, struggle and blunder your way through the levels.
An object lesson in how great programming beats out stunning graphics every time, the appeal with Portal 2 is the immense satisfaction gained from working out how to beat the puzzles, as opposed to gratuitous ‘eye candy’.
But don’t be put off by the description ‘puzzle game’, as this is more of an action-platformer style of gameplay that features cool robots plus a funny script, and requires solid thinking and quick reactions to succeed.
The way the game plays with physics can make your head spin but there are some laugh-out-loud moments, largely thanks to brilliant voiceover work by Stephen Merchant, J.K. Simmons and Ellen McLain in the support cast.
If you want to experience the very best that videogaming can be, as well as savour a top contender for 2011 Game of the Year, go grab Portal 2 right now!
