Qualcomm SD870 5G for 2021 flagships

We all expected the next Qualcomm flagship processor to be the 5nm SD888. Qualcomm has slipped in a beefed-up version of the SD865+ – the Qualcomm SD870 5G and its likely to be in most near future flagships.

The Qualcomm SD870 5G (website here) is not a new design. It is a 7nm SD855+ SoC with the A77 core increased from 3.1Ghz to 3.2Ghz. As far as we can tell, the specs are otherwise identical.

Motorola Edge S, OnePlus, OPPO, iQOO, vivo and Xiaomi will use the SD870 from Q1, 2021, and have already committed to launching SD 888 smartphones.

The SD870 5G may enable some chip price reductions as it is a refresh that extends the life of the SD865+.
