Samsung LED TVs go light on the power consumption

The “new species” of Samsung LED televisions launched this month, are some of the most energy efficient televisions in Australia. Samsung LED TVs have achieved up to 6.0 stars under the Federal Government’s Energy Rating scheme, setting a new standard for energy efficiency in a television category.

Samsung’s Series 6 and Series 7 LED TVs will sport a minimum 5 star rating from today forward. Two of these products have achieved an incredible level of 6 stars – Samsung’s highest to date. Samsung believes its 55″ LED TV models will set the benchmark for energy efficiency.

By participating in the current voluntarily labelling scheme, prior to the government’s mandatory labelling scheme commencing this October, Samsung has set an exemplary standard for company support for a government driven initiative. The rating system is a similar to the energy ratings which have been mandatory on washing machines, fridges and air conditioners for several years. It will help consumers identify which television is the most energy efficient, an issue which has become increasingly important to their purchasing decision.

“Samsung is extremely proud to be playing a lead role in an industry which is increasingly conscious of energy consumption levels and environmental impacts of raw materials,” commented Mark Leathan, Head of Marketing, Consumer Electronics, Samsung Electronics Australia.

“The beauty of the Samsung LED TV range is that picture quality, brightness and connectivity are in no way compromised despite remarkable levels of energy efficiency. Samsung LED TVs use up to 40% less power than an equivalent sized LCD TV and we’re delighted that our customers will see a financial saving as a result.”

The energy ratings on Samsung’s LED TVs are as follows:

Series 6

40-inch – star rating 5
46-inch – star rating 5.5
55-inch – star rating 6

Series 7

40-inch – star rating 5
46-inch – star rating 5.5
55-inch – star rating 6

Samsung’s LED TVs manage to achieve such a low level of energy consumption due largely to the LED edge lighting technology present in every unit. This is the same technology which allows the panel to achieve high levels of brightness and contrast (as the individual LEDs are able to turn completely off, generating incredible contrast ratio) and slimness (as the LEDs are embedded into the edge of the panel, eliminating the need for the traditional more bulky backlighting.
