Samsung Thunderbolt 3 X5 is go!

Christmas

Samsung Thunderbolt 3 X5 is the world’s fastest portable SSD drive. With read/write speeds of up to 2,800/2300Mbps it approaches the domain of internal M.2 PCIe NVMe SSDs.

For too long external drives have suffered by a USB-A 2.0 or 3.0, SATA interface. Typically 480Mbps/5Gbps half-duplex meaning half the rated speed.

The came USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 at 5Gbps and Gen 2 at 10Gbps full-duplex.

Finally, Thunderbolt 3 that has a theoretical speed of 40Gbps. But, if the cable is over .5M or if attached to a dock it drops to 20Gbps.

Still, 1Gbps equals 125MBps – not bad going. The Samsung Thunderbolt 3 X5 can achieve up to 2800Mbps or 350MB (megabytes) per second.

Claudio Cardile, Director, B2B Sales, Samsung Electronics Australia said:
“Samsung has developed the new Portable SSD X5 for people who demand the ultimate performance and portability. This includes people working in creative and digital fields who require fast, reliable technology that does not compromise on delivering the best possible outcomes.”

“The Portable SSD X5 will help Australians edit high-resolution videos, render 3D images, and engage in other data-heavy activities quickly and on the go.

“This product breaks new ground for our premium SSD portfolio and will open our customers to incredible speed and storage, as well as read and write capacity.”

The Samsung Thunderbolt 3 X5 is for big files!

Considering portable hard drives have been flat out getting 10-100MB/s this is an amazing quantum leap. It means that 4K video and 3D renders can be done on an external device at speeds within 15-20% of the current fastest PCI NVMe 3.0 4 lane M.2 SSDs.

It has a metal body and non-slip bottom mat. The shock-resistant internal frame can withstand accidental drops of up to two meters.

Dynamic Thermal Guard technology and a heat sink – a mechanical internal solution – safeguard the X5 from overheating.

It comes with ‘Samsung Portable SSD Software’, based on the AES 256-bit hardware data encryption, including optional password protection and easy configuration of security settings.
