Samsung’s Series 9 laptop changes names, offers more reasons to impress

When you talk high end to Samsung, they say “Series 9” back to you, the company’s name for the best in show of everything, and today it made its current best in show laptop even better with some impressive updates.

Brandishing a new name, the next generation of Samsung Series 9 computers will bring with it new Intel processors, better battery life, and one of the highest resolution screens on the market.

The computer, now called the ATIV Book 9 Plus – see what Samsung has done? – continues the look and feel of the prior Series 9 laptops by keeping the style but aiming to make it thinner and the specs better.

As such, the new machine will weight 1.39 kilograms, be 13.6mm thin, and offer a 13.3 inch screen supports 3200×1800 and touch, a first for any product in the Samsung Series 9 range.

That massive resolution is the same screen we saw back in May when Samsung first showed it to the world at SID in Canada, and is higher than both the Retina display in the Apple MacBook Pro series and Toshiba’s own Kirabook.

The new machine will use either an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, 8GB RAM, USB 3.0, Windows 8, offer up to 12 hours of battery life, and work with a new feature called HomeSync Lite, which connects the storage in the laptop to the cloud and allows information to be synchronised between Galaxy smartphones and laptops seamlessly.

It’s not the only machine in the Series 9 line-up, now called “ATIV Book 9.”

Samsung’s second machine in that brand will be the ATIV Book 9 Lite (above), and offer up a quad-core processor, 4GB RAM, similar storage options, Windows 8, but merely a high-definition 1366×768 13.3 inch screen, similar to the display on the current crop of Series 9 13 inch laptops.

The body is still expected to sport the same style and design, but touch becomes a choice in this model, with battery life dropping to around eight hours on the model without touch capabilities.

Like a Galaxy phone... only a computer.

A new entrant to Samsung’s computer line-up will be the ATIV One (above), an all-in-one model from the brand designed to blend in with the Galaxy look.

Inside, you can expect up to 1TB of storage (conventional hard drive), 4GB RAM, Windows 8, and the use of an AMD quad-core processor, with a 21.5 inch screen supporting the Full HD resolution of 1920×1080.

Local pricing and availability have yet to be confirmed on any of these, but we’ll let you know when we know.
