Screen maintenance

Choose the right solution

While there are a number of different cleaning solutions available, unless it?s explicitly stated otherwise, you?re safest bet is to clean your screen?s surface with IPA (Isoprophyl Alcohol) or Hexane.

Any ?keytone? type material (Acetone), ethyl or methyl chloride must not be used as they can cause damage to the LCD?s polariser or the surrounds on a plasma screen.

Usage

As LCD and plasma TVs are sensitive electronic equipment, the following precautions should be taken.

Never disassemble an LCD or plasma TV under any circumstances. If unqualified operators or users assemble the product after disassembling it, it may not function or its operation may be seriously affected.

When not in use, the screen must be turned off or you should enable a screen-saver to frequently change what?s displayed on the screen. If the same pattern is displayed for a long period of time, such as when a game console is left running for days, the screen?s brightness may be diminished or image ?butn-in? may occur.

Caution

Both plasma and LCD screens are made of glass, so exercise caution when handling them. Shock, vibration, and careless handling may seriously affect the screen?s performance, so be careful when unpacking or moving your flat panel from place to place.

Handling

An LCD TV?s surface is made of a soft film substrate, which is vulnerable to scratching and damage by sharp articles. The front panel of a plasma screen is also made from glass and can be easily scratched or marked. LCD and plasma panels may be damaged if they are twisted, if they fall from a high place or receive a strong shock. This is why it makes sense to put on a pair of soft gloves during handling or assembly of your prized unit.

Temperature

Flat panel TVs can have their operating life significantly shortened when they are used during hot weather or very humid conditions. When used at low temperatures (10 degrees Celsius or lower), the TV?s response time and brightness can be affected in such a way that a proper picture may not be displayed.

When exposed to drastic fluctuations in temperature, the screen?s overall performance and longevity may be affected. Drastic temperature fluctuations from cold conditions to hot, produces dew on the inner surfaces, which, in the case of LCDs, may affect the operation of the polariser and overall performance of the picture.

To the grave

Dispose of flat panel displays according to the relevant laws and regulations in your area. A small quantity of mercury is contained in the lamp inside LCD screens. There are other potential contaminants found in both LCD and plasma screens that should be disposed of in the most environmentally friendly and responsible way. So while it may seem like a long time before you need to replace your flat panel with a new one, don?t just ship it off to the tip when the time comes.

Humidity

It is recommended that you use your flat panel TV in a clean place and to exercise caution to ensure it is not affected by dust or liquids. If used in dusty place, dust may cause an electrical short inside the panel resulting in it malfunctioning. If liquid enters the panel it may cause electrical failure or corrosion.
