While many of us log in to our email on a regular basis, many of us have no idea if our accounts have been hacked. Luckily, there’s a way to find out.

Created by the Australian company Avalanche Technology, “Should I Change My Password” is a free service that quickly scans hacked databases to find out if your email address was compromised, when it was broken into, and if you need to change your passwords pronto.

“When your email is compromised a big part of your life can be exposed,” said Kevin Yank, the Chief Technology Officer at Avalanche Technology. “A hacker can access your Facebook or Twitter account, invade your personal emails and in some cases even reset your bank password – all within minutes.”

The service is fairly simple to use: just type the email address in and hit “Check it”.

If your email comes up clean, great! If not, you might want to change that password quickly, making it more secure by substituting letters with numbers and punctuation.

For instance, a highly unsafe password of “password” would actually be safer if written as “[email protected]$w0rd!”.
