Sony’s second-generation Motionflow 200Hz BRAVIA LCD TV – here in July

Sony Australia has announced the release of its second generation Motionflow 200Hz BRAVIA LCD TV – the Z5500 series. The successor to Australia’s number one selling television, the Z4500 series, this TV features Motionflow 200Hz technology for the world’s fastest frame rate on an LCD TV.

The Z5500 will be available in three screen sizes – 52″, 46″ and 40″ – and will arrive in Australian stores in July 2009.

The KDL46Z4500 was the number one selling LCD TV in value from December 2008 to April 2009. With a new thin and stylish design that incorporates a narrow bezel and thin cabinet depth, the Z5500 series features Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution, as well as the following features:

  • Motionflow 200Hz: Sony’s unique picture algorithm and hardware to develop the smoothest picture ever from a LCD TV
  • New BRAVIA Engine 3: Clearer signal processing for optimal contrast levels in every scene, displaying images with amazing depth and clarity
  • 24p True Cinema: Automatic recognition of films shot at 24 frames per second, for movie playback with realistic film-like quality
  • XrossMediaBar (XMB): Eliminates the need to look at the remote control while searching and selecting content, now with enhanced 3D favourites menu
  • BRAVIA Sync: Controls a wide range of Sony home entertainment devices via one remote control
  • DLNA-certified: Enables wireless access to digital photos, music and video content on other DLNA compliant products over a home network
  • Additional connectivity: Four HDMI inputs, single PC, component, composite and S-video inputs

Energy saving

The Z5500 series includes energy saving features, such as the Ambient Light Sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness of the picture in accordance with the ambient light. Similarly, when used as a PC monitor, the TV automatically switches into standby mode when no input signal from the PC is detected for 30 seconds.

The Z5500 also has a conveniently located Energy Saving Switch that lets you shut off the TV’s power, without having to unplug the AC cord from the mains. This cuts standby mode power consumption to less than 0.0001W.

Motionflow 200Hz

Moving pictures on TVs are created by showing a sequence of still images (or frames) in quick succession. Better motion reproduction on LCD TVs is achieved by creating and inserting new and unique frames between the original frames. Motionflow 200Hz technology creates up to three additional frames for every original frame, increasing the typical frame rate from 50 to 200 per second. This increased frame rate greatly improves the clarity of fast-moving objects and panning scenes on screen.
