Sony says its real 4K projectors are now in use by more than 22,000 cinema screens. That is Sonys true native 4K projector commitment.
It has taken the next bold step to produce a range of true native 4K, 4096 x 2160, 17:9 projectors for home theatre and commercial use.
As Sony Australia, Professional Solutions Sales and Business Development Manager Michael Bromley explained, “We often get asked, what is a real or true, native 4K solution?”
“These are not just upscaled to 4K. The electronics, lenses and everything product true, native 4K. Simply, 4K is a projected image in the aspect ratio of 4096 x 2160 with approximately 8.8 million pixels. Each pixel is side by side, not overlapping and not using shifting or wobulation technology to move pixels. Our 4K home theatre projectors are a true native 4K projector with no resolution or image manipulation,” he added.
Wobulation is the term for a form of interlacing designed for use with fixed pixel displays. The term comes from the word ‘wobble’. It came from HP’s work with the overlap of printing ink. Wobulation reduces the cost and complexity of components required for the creation of high-resolution TVs and projectors. It is primarily used in projectors using Digital Light Processing (DLP).
Sonys true native 4K projector needs more than just the resolution
They also need processing and scaling to handle a range of content, from HD to 4K HDR.
Bromley added, “Sony is about the lens to the lounge room. Sony cameras capture content in 4K HDR; Sony Pictures and Columbia Tri-Star developed the scaling algorithm that power the X1 Reality Creation scaler that is in all of our premium 4K displays; and last year we won a Scientific and Engineering Award at the Oscars for our F65 CineAlta digital motion picture camera. This intimate knowledge of cinema and 4K helps us power our 4K home cinema projectors.”
Bromley says you get what you pay for as he explained
The true, native 4K projector can handle a much wider and diverse range of content such as HDR10.
The new Z-phosphor laser light sources in some of the 4K range have up to 20,000 hours of maintenance-free performance.
4K has become the resolution of choice for a customer looking for premium home cinema projection experience.
Sony 4K projectors have a specifically developed optic for 4K projection and 4K SXRD IC components to handle high-end processing. Home cinema enthusiast gets the very best performance from whichever Sony 4K projector they choose.
