Tech stores go Boxing Day bargain crazy

Sales are an excellent time to grab things cheaper.

You knew this would happen, so here it is: the big end of year sales from Australia’s big stores, and we’ve rounded up a lot of the savings so you can find them in one place.

As usual, Australia’s biggest department stores have slashed prices, making you wonder why they were priced so high the rest of the year.

Myer is first in this, advertising a “$2 million computer clearance” that sadly skips the savings on Apple computers, although Myer is taking $100 off every Apple computer in store. Otherwise, the laptop sale features savings as low as $99 to as much as $300-400 on notebooks.

Myer is also taking 15% off compact and digital SLR cameras, chopping $100-150 from some Bose gear, and you can even pick up a Pure DAB+ clock radio for $59. The same 15% discount also jumps to a selection of TVs, Blu-ray players, HiFi systems, and home entertainment furniture, while home appliances will also be reduced in price.

Most major department stores seem to be offering $100 off Apple laptops.

David Jones – the other big department store in Australia – is getting a similar treatment, the company offering the same 15% savings on cameras, home theatre gear, appliances, whitegoods, and more. The same $100 discount on Apple computers is at David Jones, and you’ll also find a savings of “40% or more on a great range of PS3, Xbox 360, DS, and Wii” titles.

Then we’ve got JB HiFi getting into the post-Christmas spirit with some solid gadget goodness. The electronics retailer is offering the new black Xbox 360 4GB console for $149, down from the regular $249 that you can find it for. You’ll also find lots of games for PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 under a “2 for $40” listing, 30% off computer accessories, 30% of in-car sound equipment, 20% off GPS navigation products, and 20% off Blu-rays, DVD movies, and CDs.

Dick Smith is joining in, with 25% off all notebooks, 10% off Apple computers (though no iPads here), 30% off notebook bags, 40% off Telstra cordless phones, 30% off boomboxes, and 20% off a range of Philips HiFi gear.

Need a new computer? Dell is cutting the price of quite a few of its systems, including laptops with Blu-ray drives, solid state storage, and even gaming-ready desktops with 24 inch LED monitors.

An Xbox 360 for $149 is one of the better deals we've seen all year.

Maybe you want a new washing machine or fridge? Appliances Online is offering up to 45% off on front-load washers, microwave ovens, dishwashers, and up to 40% off on a selection of fridges and vented clothes drivers.

There’s also loads more to be had around the country, so make sure to check in with your favourite stores over the next few days to see what the bargains look like.

We don’t know how long any of this is going to last, so make sure to act fast if you want to get in on the savings. Usually these sales last until the end of the year, but some stores will have a “first in” policy, so don’t be surprised if the deals are snapped up fast.
