Dyson has released the 2019 version of its Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan heater and can now capture 99.95% of particle pollution – as well as a few new, must-have ‘Dyson only’ features.
Now you need to know two things with Dyson. First, it’s going to be expensive. Second, it’s going to have a lot of science behind it to (hopefully) justify the cost of joining the Dyson clan.
The new Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan heater has a range of improvements to the previous generation including:
Sensing: An LCD shows the particles and gases in real time using a unique Dyson algorithm.
Lasers measure and identify fine particles. A sensor detects VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), such as benzene and formaldehyde, and NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide). Another sensor measures relative humidity and temperature.
Capturing: 60% more HEPA media into a taller and deeper HEPA filter and introduced three times more activated carbon.
Nine metres of a condensed and sealed borosilicate microfiber filter captures 99.95% of particle pollution as small as 0.1microns, including allergens, bacteria, pollen and mould spores. Activated carbon filters, which have been coated with Tris (Trishydroxymethylaminomethane) to increase their absorption efficiency, remove gases including NO2, formaldehyde and benzene.
Projecting: 350⁰ degrees oscillation and Air Multiplier Technology (Coandă effect), the machine can project over 290 litres of air per second to every corner of the room.

Heating: With thermostat heat control, the machine automatically keeps your room at the target temperature.
Fan mode: Despite the name the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool does not cool – it is a fan, not a compressor or evaporative air conditioner.
Diffused mode blocks the front aperture, diverting air through the rear of the annular loop at a 45⁰ angle. Great if you hate air blown at you.

Maintenance
Dyson recommends the replacement of both filters every 12 months based on 12 hours per day use. If you select continuous monitoring, it can shorten the filter life to 6 months. In practice, the machine will indicate replacement based on air quality and hours of use. Replacement filter price is not available but based on the Pure Cool Link version expect around $100.

GadgetGuy’s take – join the clan if you can afford it
Disclaimer: I have the 2018 Dyson Pure Hot+Cool purifying fan heater, and it has become a fixture in our Sydney apartment bedroom – summer and winter to clean the air and more evenly distribute the airflow. It is quiet and does a great job. Damn – now I will have to buy another to get that extra .05% clean!
I also own the 2018 Dyson Pure Cool Link that is the basis of this new product. It services a similar-sized bedroom at our Central Coast home. With the 350° adjustable swivel, it has been handy to vary to suit the room. It is also quiet enough on level 4 so as not to disturb sleep.
So, I know the capabilities better than most. These are well designed, well made and apart from a severe case of techno-babble (Sir James is an engineer and probably describes cornflakes as desiccated corn baked at 350° and rolled and crisped). The website reflects an abundance of marketing hype as well.
Despite that Dyson products, on the whole, do an excellent job in the right sized room – for those that don’t need to ask the price.
