Uniden Baby Monitors new range

Uniden Baby Monitors new range

The new range of Uniden Baby monitors – let’s call it Orwellian style kids surveillance – include a 4.3″ wireless video monitor, a remote pan and tilt camera and a cute, schmaltzy, coloured Panda bear coved camera – are kids that shallow?

The new Uniden Baby Monitors have addressed the hacking issue prevalent in so many other brands by changes to the password setup and via data encryption.

We have not reviewed the Uniden Baby Monitors 2020 (no children here thank goodness), so we won’t rate them. What we can say is that we know the optics and electronics used, the build quality and are confident that are all fit for purpose.

Uniden Baby Monitors new range

  • Australian website here (note we are referring to the models marked ‘new’)
  • From all Uniden stockist including hardware, electronics retailers, baby stores and security stores.

Note: A prime decision is the brand of camera you select because you want the same app to control them all. In this case, the new models are all OK Google or Alexa compatible, and you can hand control over to a voice assistant after setup.

BW3101x series

Uniden Baby Monitors

Monitor

The main feature of this series is a 4.3″ Wi-Fi 480 x 272, colour video and audio monitor that you can place anywhere convenient and see what is going on. The encrypted data stream means that only your monitor or the remote smartphone app can access the video feed. The monitor can handle up to four baby cameras and records in MJPEG to a 32GB microSD card.

A nice feature is a room temperature readout and a temperature range alert that could be useful to detect fire. It has a walkie talkie feature (half-duplex press to talk – Roger Victor) and can play four lullabies. Power is a plug pack 5V/900mA, and the internal battery will last up to 4.5 hours in a blackout.

It also has a mini-USB port to connect to a PC and an AV out port so you can connect to a suitable TV or monitor. The charge dock has an Ethernet port as well.

Camera

There is no PIR motion detector as this may produce too many false positives. Instead, it has VOX (voice activation) that you can set for sensitivity. The lens is f/2.8, and it records in 640×480 or 320×240, so it is more about viewing than fine detail. It has IR mono night vision (a spotlight would wake the baby).

We issue the standard warning on Wi-Fi connected devices that it needs a signal below -75dBm to function. You can read more about how to test that in our Uniden Guardian App CAM Floodlight review.

If you are thinking of buying can read the manual here (it is PDF – check your downloads folder).

Here cute Panda – at the moment it comes in polar white, but coloured silicon Panda sleeves are coming. Specs are the same as the Pan and Tilt (except that).

Uniden Baby Monitors

It comes with a magnetic base and a flexible mount as well. Slip it inside the Teletubby-like case, and away you go.
