With the hugely anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 on the horizon, Lenovo has been testing some new tech that might just change the way we watch the game.
The collaboration between FIFA and Lenovo involves personalised devices accessible from the fans’ seats. This device gives the spectator access to live match data, replays, and exclusive venue information, all from the comfort of their stadium seat.
Piloting has already begun during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 as well as in Miami and New York, with the likes of David Beckham and Ronaldo among the first to be treated to the experience.
The device looks to be a Motorola Edge smartphone attached to a custom rotating mount mechanism to ensure adaptability to the different seat configurations. There is also a larger Lenovo Tab K11 tablet option that is a more immersive expansion of the project. This includes custom software by Lenovo’s Solutions & Services Group, offering a personalised experience.
During the testing, some of the most replayed moments included the possible penalty for a handball in the Chelsea v Fluminense semi-final. To get your own controllable replay of a questionable decision during a match sounds like a dream come true as a sporting fan.
With such a successful trial now complete, we are set for a rollout across all the FIFA World Cup 26 venues, involving thousands of devices. It’s great to see such innovative tech being introduced not only for athletes, but for spectators as well.
What other tech may be coming in the near future for sports spectators?
