IFA is usually a haven for smart home technologies, but this year’s appliance expo looks to have a focus on smart homes as a service. Alongside its recent announcements, LG confirmed the overseas launch of ‘ThinQ AI’, the next step of its smart home ecosystem that aims to proactively cater to users’ needs.

Building on the company’s existing ThinQ platform, part of the additions is something called ‘ThinQ Care’. Described by LG as providing “proactive support that predicts potential malfunctions or issues before they occur”, the service uses diagnostic data to try and keep appliances running for longer.

Complementing the automated diagnostic tool is ‘ThinQ Up’, which is what LG calls its ongoing software support for appliances. Compatible devices will be able to get new features via software updates, while users can suggest features through the ThinQ app.

AI is already used to optimise appliance energy and water efficiency, so it’ll be interesting to see how LG’s ideas come to fruition.
