Called “performance AI glasses”, the newly announced Oakley Meta Vanguard smart specs are designed to be sports glasses that help you train and record your best moments.
Revealed alongside the latest Ray-Ban smart glasses at Meta Connect, Oakley’s wearable adds Garmin and Strava integrations for use with Meta AI. When paired with a Garmin watch, for example, instead of constantly checking your wrist, you can verbally ask the glasses to display your heart rate in your peripheral vision.
Equipped with a 12MP camera that records 3K footage at a 122-degree field of view, the Oakley Meta Vanguard can automatically record video while you’re working out. Meant to capture milestone moments, it also stabilises footage, so you don’t have to worry about shaky vision when hitting the pavement.
Meta says that slow-motion and hyperlapse recording modes help capture cool moments, like skiing at high speeds or landing skateboard tricks. The glasses’ IP67 rating means they’re built for exercising in lots of different weather conditions.
Audio is also a big focus here; the glasses have the loudest speakers of any Oakley smart wearables to date. That’s so you can hear your tunes, even when running into a strong headwind. When playing music, the glasses last up to six hours, or up to nine hours of general use. Adding the extra battery time from the included charging case, they can last up to an extra 36 hours.
Starting at $789 in Australia, Meta confirmed that its new Oakleys are coming on 21 October. Pre-orders are open now online, with the Oakley Meta Vanguard available in four colour combos, consisting of black or white frames and different-coloured lenses.
