Australian audio brand Rode is keen to streamline podcast production as much as possible, launching the RodeCaster Video S, an all-in-one device that combines audio and video inputs.
It’s a comprehensive bit of kit that’s both smaller and cheaper ($840) than the standard RodeCaster Video ($2,030). Rode’s new mini production desk supports up to nine audio sources, four video sources, and five customisable scenes to swap between.
On that latter point, it means the RodeCaster Video S can mix all of your sources together, while quickly switching between different angles or graphical overlays. So, if you’re recording a video podcast or livestreaming, a quick button press can change from a one-shot to a two-shot, or to an intermission overlay if there are any breaks.
For those different scenes, Rode’s device houses 24GB of internal storage. That’s where you can store graphics and overlays to cycle through during a production. For comparison, the bigger RodeCaster Video relied on MicroSD card storage.
On the device are various XLR, HDMI, and USB inputs for different recording devices. There’s also wireless connectivity plus Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, so you can use any compatible wireless devices part of your setup.
Reading through the specs on Rode’s website, this isn’t a gadget you casually buy on a whim (unless you have a lot of disposable income). Instead, it’s for people keen to take audio and video production seriously, who need a sole point of contact for multiple inputs.
The RodeCaster Video S is available to pre-order now and is expected to arrive by December. It adds to Rode’s recently announced Wireless Micro Camera Kit, designed to connect its small wireless microphones to cameras and phones.
