Samsung launched a 500Hz gaming monitor last month, and I tried my hand at some Rainbow Six Siege to test it out. No, that’s not a typo: five hundred hertz. 120Hz and 240Hz screens sound comparatively old hat next to the new Samsung Odyssey OLED G6 monitor.
I was struck by how responsive the monitor was, and I can see it fitting right at home with an ultra-competitive gaming PC rig. The more frames you can squeeze, the smoother the motion and quicker the on-screen action updates. In competitive games where reaction times make all the difference, high refresh rates are seen as an advantage.
The only drawback is that Samsung’s 27-inch monitor caps out at a 1440p resolution, not 4K. That’s not a big deal, really, when many pro esports players often dial down graphical fidelity to maximise frame rates anyway.
If you’re keen to take a look, the Samsung Odyssey OLED G6 is out now in Australia for $1,699.
