PlayStation might finally be opening up its peripheral ecosystem to more brands, having officially licensed the new Turtle Beach Atlas 200 headsets for PS4 and PS5. It’s the first time Turtle Beach has brought out an ‘official’ PlayStation headset, potentially paving the way to more third-party support.
Sure, PlayStation headsets are bountiful. You can technically plug any pair of headphones into a DualSense controller. But it’s far less common for PlayStation to officially license a third-party peripheral. If you’ve ever looked at third-party PS5 controllers, you’ll know the options are both scant and expensive.
Turtle Beach Atlas 200 price, release date, and details
Turtle Beach’s Atlas 200 headset is wired, sitting at a reasonable $99.95 price point in Australia, putting it at the opposite end of the $599 Stealth Pro model from 2023. It uses the brand’s 50mm Nanoclear drivers, designed to support spatial audio on PlayStation and other platforms, including PC.
There’s also a PC-specific version that comes with a USB-A connector if you don’t have a 3.5mm port handy. You’re out of luck if your PC only has USB-C ports, though. Interestingly, Turtle Beach’s overseas website lists the PC-specific Atlas 200 at US$10 more expensive than the PlayStation version. I’ve followed up to check whether this price difference also applies in Australia.
Comfort is a big factor for gaming headsets, and Turtle Beach reckons its headset does the job. On that front, the Atlas 200 employs an adjustable floating headband, ear cups made from memory foam, and a design Turtle Beach claims is “glasses-friendly”. Its 280-gram weight is fairly light as far as gaming headsets go.
For the headset’s flip-to-mute microphone, Turtle Beach advertises it as being unidirectional. In other words, it’s not meant to pick up any background noise or chatter. Just you barking at your Fortnite squad, who have once again abandoned you in favour of something shiny in the distance.
The Turtle Beach Atlas 200 headset is due to release in Australia on 19 September in black and white colours. Expect to see it stocked by the usual suspects, including EB Games and The Gamesmen.
