The Black Friday sales might be good for buying fun things you’ve been waiting for, but they’re also great for getting discounts on the essentials, like phone plans. In a rare sale from Boost Mobile, the telco has $60 off its 12-month prepaid SIM plan as part of a Black Friday promotion.

The main drawcard here is that you can get Telstra-level coverage, without the higher prices associated with Australia’s biggest telco. For example, until 1 December, Boost Mobile’s 12-month SIM plan costs $305, while Telstra charges $350 for its equivalent SIM.

Boost’s long-expiry SIM also includes more data: 365GB versus Telstra’s 165GB allocation (which is 300GB for the first recharge). That works out to be a bit over $25 and 30GB per month, which stacks up pretty well alongside many of the cheapest SIM plans.

$305 for an annual SIM is a bit pricer than other long-expiry plans (see the comparison widget below). However, Boost Mobile is the only mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) to provide access to the entire Telstra network.

That includes overall network coverage reaching 99.7 per cent of the Australian population, with 5G coverage spanning 91 per cent of the population. Other Telstra MVNOs, like Tangerine and Belong, only use parts of Telstra’s network, meaning less comprehensive coverage.

Boost Mobile also sells a $300 long-expiry SIM plan that comes with 290GB for the first year. Subsequent annual recharges then include a lower 240GB data allocation. Either way, you’re looking at roughly $25 per month for the widest-reaching network coverage in Australia.

Adding to the Boost Mobile Black Friday sale are discounts on its 28-day SIM plans and refurbished phones. If you’re thinking about a SIM swap, now’s the time.
