Taiwanese company ASUS changed the portable computing landscape with the EeePC, a tiny, cheap laptop computer that may not be the most powerful laptop on the market but is certainly more than good enough for many people.

The company has now taken the cheap and cheerful concept a step further by creating a desktop computer called the Eee Box.

The Eee Box is marginally bigger than a VHS movie cassette and can be stood up on its side, placed flat on your desk or mounted on the back of your flat-screen monitor. In other words, you won’t need to sacrifice oodles of desk space to fit it in. It even comes in different colours and is rather stylish!

Inside, you get wired and wireless network connections, four USB ports so you can connect a mouse, keyboard, digital camera and a printer. There’s also an 80GB hard drive – small by today’s standards but still capable of storing a few hundred documents and several thousand photos and songs.

Switch on the Eee Box and you get the choice of using Windows XP or a “lite” mode that starts up in just a few seconds, but offers just a web browser, online chat, photos and some online games. If you’re looking for a small and inexpensive desktop PC that won’t look out of place in any room of the house, then the Eee Box is worth a look.
