Sonos One now is gen 2 with an update to the processor, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and increased memory.
The new Sonos One Gen 2 announcement seems to indicate that the sound quality is the same and the Gen 1 and 2 are interchangeable.
But the glimmer of hope Aussies have been waiting for is mentioned in passing:
There aren’t any functionality changes between the two, and Google Assistant will be coming to both of them when we’re ready to go.
It appears that both Gen 1 and Gen 2 will support Google Assistant. Sonos has an update here – it’s a few months old but still attracting comments. Most have given up waiting and bought a Google Home Mini!
And the added processor speed and memory should enable AirPlay 2 support.
GadgetGuy’s take: Sonos One is sweet
It is the best sounding speaker, and while Alexa support is good, in Australia we have embraced Google Assistant. At last count, 76% of smart speakers were Google Assistant capable, and Alexa, Siri, et al. were well behind.
Sonos is important because it supports so many music sources.
The Gen 2 is identified on the product label and box.
