Logitech adds AirPlay to its arsenal with a $500 speaker

Logitech’s Ultimate Ears brand is known for some pretty good headphones, but its latest product is the first time we’ve seen the “UE” badge stuck on a speaker, with the first AirPlay product out by the peripheral company.

The Logitech UE Air Speaker functions as both an iPod dock and a wireless speaker, requiring the dock connection for iDevices only on the first setup if you want to use the latter functionality.

To set it up, Logitech simply asks you to dock the device, download the app, run it, connect the Air Speaker to your wireless network, and it’s done: you’re now ready to wirelessly send music from an iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch wirelessly.

If you don’t have an iOS device, you can still send music to the AirPlay, albeit with a 3.5mm connection. Sadly, AirPlay isn’t an open standard and is therefore not universal across all devices.

Logitech’s UE Air Speaker isn’t due to arrive for around 5-6 weeks, where it will see a $499 RRP in stores across Australia, a price tag that may be viewed as a little high given both the $400 price in America and the cost of other AirPlay speakers from brands such as JBL which offers AirPlay in docks from as low as $329.
