New Arlo Pro 5 2K security camera brings better battery and connectivity

Arlo Pro 5 2K security camera announcement

Billed as an upgrade to one of the best security cameras in Australia, the Arlo Pro 5 2K has just arrived on local shores.

Available now for $329, the new camera follows the highly-recommended Arlo Pro 4 with some welcome additions aimed at enhancing your home security setup. Among the improvements are dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity and a longer-lasting battery.

Late last year, Arlo announced the Pro 5S for overseas markets, and we’re now getting what appears to be a local version. Along with several features standard across the brand’s ecosystem, on paper, the Arlo Pro 5 2K security camera looks like a worthwhile step up from its predecessor.

Straight off the bat, the Pro 5’s dual-band wireless support means support for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi connections. If your devices are close together, the 5GHz band means you’ll benefit from faster speeds. In practice, Arlo says it should result in less video buffering and quicker loading so you get more up-to-date surveillance. On the flipside, the 2.4GHz band covers more area, so you can still connect devices from further away.

Arlo claims a 30% battery life increase from the Pro 4 to the Pro 5 camera. On the company’s website, the Arlo Pro 5 2K lists an eight-month rechargeable battery life, compared to the Pro 4’s six months. On top of this, the Pro 5 also includes a new low-power mode designed for battery longevity.

Aside from the internal upgrades, the Arlo Pro 5 2K functions similarly to the previous model. Like the Pro 4, it has 2K video, a 160-degree viewing angle, and app compatibility. The home security company recently revamped the pricing of its Arlo Secure subscription, making it a bit more affordable to access extra features like geofencing, schedules, and custom alarms.

Other features include an in-built spotlight and colour night vision, while the camera is also compatible with IFTTT, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant platforms for integrating within smart home systems.

Bradley Little, Arlo Vice President of Sales — APAC, mentioned that the company’s latest offering in Australia progresses its smart home security services.

“The Arlo Pro 5 is one of the most secure and reliable security cameras Arlo has engineered to date,” Little said in a media release. “Integrating three wireless technologies into one extremely compact form factor ensures users are better equipped to ‘protect their everything’.”

Where to get Arlo’s new security camera

Out now, you can get the Arlo Pro 5 2K directly through the company’s official website or from various retailers.

One of the biggest standouts is that not only does the Pro 5 introduce some welcome improvements over the Pro 4, but it’s also cheaper. At $329, its RRP compares favourably to the Pro 4’s $369. Arlo has a strong record with its smart home security devices, which makes this camera a reasonable upgrade. Or, a good starting point if you don’t already have a home security system.
